Development of new products progresses slowly.

Strengths: Affy is a stalwart in the microarray business. The produce microarrays for a variety of model organisms (human, mouse, rat) in a variety of specific applications (gene expression, snp genotyping, copy number, splicing). We have used their early access HJAY arrays to probe transcriptomc isoform changes with great success. They have been valuable in refining our analysis and very receptive to our feedback.

In addition, we have also been using their microarrays for pathogen detection in food chain testing and have found this to be a reliable, cost effective, technically replicable workflow.

Needs to improve: The microarray business has been under intense pressure from competitors (nimblegen/roche and illumina). Affy is no longer the only name in the game and does not even regin supreme in this area. Their platforms and technology are in need of an update to compete in this market.

Within the past month, we started using Affymetrix’s ProcartaPlex Multiplex Immunoassay for detecting cytokines and growth factors. Previously, we’ve used ELISA, but I’m surprised that this new method works just as well without taking more time and using significantly less sample (<50 uL). I haven’t found any downside other than it’s not as cheap as running ELISA, but I think using less sample helps to offset the cost slightly.
