CUSTOMIZATION
At Hewn, we believe in the art of perfecting woodworking by merging age-old traditions with cutting-edge design concepts. Every client is distinct, and we understand the importance of reflecting that individuality in the products they choose. That's why we offer an unmatched level of customization for every product we offer. Whether you desire a specific wood type, a particular finish, or a unique design twist, we're dedicated to tailoring our offerings to meet your specifications. By doing this, we ensure that every piece resonates deeply with your vision, standing as a testament to our artisanal craftsmanship and your distinct taste.

SUSTAINABILITY

We believe the best way to honor the past is to preserve it. The wood we use is a sustainable resource, sourced locally from North American forests and specifically planted to be harvested via responsible means. When practiced properly, responsible forestry techniques represent one of the greatest tools in the fight to preserve our old-growth forests on a grand scale and protect the fragile ecosystems that call them home.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Hewn's Quality Assurance Program is designed to ensure that specific quality expectations are met. This program includes both the sales and the manufacturing processes.

Sales

1. Approved Estimate:

  • Order is issued via Adobe Sign for final and review and acceptance with client.
  • All quantities, sizes, colors and textures are clearly listed in this document.

2. Material Sample Approval:

  • All projects will go through a sample process to confirm the following details:
    • Wood Species
    • Wood Grade
    • Texture
    • Color
    • Sealer
    • Milling Profile
  • All box beam projects and custom fabrication will require Hewn issued shop drawings signed by the client before production can begin.

Mock Ups

  •  Observe weathering in true climate
  •  Understand product appearance over a larger field of material
  •  Observe tolerance for wood movement
  •  Monitor effectiveness in rear ventilation & drainage through assembly details (i.e. rainscreen)
  •  Include all stakeholders to set realistic expectations
  •  Mock-ups available in 10 sf, 20 sf, 40 sf increments (or custom if needed)

Production

1. Lumber Selection:

  • Nearly all defects are removed from lumber before entering the production process. These defects include: end checks, waves, bowing, cupping, rot, tear-outs, splits and dead knots.

2. Milling Quality Control Check:

  • Profiles are checked for precision and quality by a milling manager.
  • Surfaces are inspected for any machining defect.
  • All 1" nominal softwoods that are wider than 6" are kerfed on the backs to prevent cupping.
  • All knot fall out is either repaired or removed after milling is completed.

Consistency and Quality

3. Sample Control:

  • Approved sample cut-off is used to check the consistency when texturing and finishing.
  • 5-10 tests pieces are run through the finishing process and the quality is compared to the approved sample/mock up cut-off. Once the Finishing Quality Control Manager signs off, the rest of the order can be finished.

4. Final Quality Control Check and Packaging

  • Material is carefully packaged to minimize chances for shipping damage during loading, unloading and transit. Every layer is covered with a protective foam to prevent marring. The material is securely banded to a protective skid and all outside edges, ends and tops of the unit is protected with cardboard and a water proof Hewn Logo lumber wrap.
  • Every Unit is numbered and contains a packing lists that shows exact tallies, and in which unit these tallies are located.
  • Each shipment comes with touch up that is used for face touch up and end cut sealer. Touch up is used for small nicks and scrapes that can occur during installation and handling on-site. All boards that are cut on-site, will need end cut sealer applied.
  • Instructions for touch up/end cut sealer are also included.

Delivery

  • All deliveries require an appointment to be made. This appointment allows installers to make arrangements for unloading.
  • A shipping email is sent to the delivery point of contact. This shipping email provides the BOL, copies of packing lists, and what to expect when material arrives.
  • Hewn sees every installer as a partner with the project, and is flexible to hold materials when needed. Storage fees are only applied when materials need to be held for long periods of time.
