American Scale Co., Inc. was founded in 1946 by an enterprising young scale technician, Harry Riehl. At that time truck scales could accommodate 40,000 lbs and the majority of businesses used a variety of dial or beam scales. However, Mr. Riehl saw the need for an independent scale company that could service a wide range of weighing equipment at a better price. He believed in offering customers quality products and service with exceptional response time and competitive rates.
When American Scale started there were only 2 employees, but with the addition of two hard working brothers, Don and Dan Peters, Harry built a company that even the big guys would have to reckon with. Incorporated in 1953, Harry continued to lead the company until 1975 when he turned the reins over to Don and Dan.
Strategically located just east of downtown Los Angeles, these two brothers had the desire to manufacturer their own truck scales in order to truly compete with other established companies. So in 1976 they bought Carey Scale, a little known company, who manufactured mechanical truck and dormant scales. With this acquisition they could not only beat the large companies in service, but now in manufacturing as well. With enhancements made to our truck scale line, we are known throughout the industry as having some of the best scales in the business.
With the development of computer technology, American Scale Co., Inc. established partnerships with other scale suppliers for equipment we did not make. We choose independent companies, like ourselves, that have the customer in mind and provide excellent service. Rice Lake Weighing Systems, GSE Inc., Cas, and SAI, to name a few are companies we represent. These companies provide quality equipment along with exceptional value.
Although scale equipment has changed we continue to follow Harry's vision. Dan's son Mark Peters, who owns the company today, still strives to be "competitive without compromise" offering quality weighing equipment at competitive prices, providing fast, courteous service so our customers can do what they do best.
