We needed a second smaller mechanical tester for tensile testing of biomaterials. I found that the Shimadzu tester was a good alternative for our budget to replicate tensile strength test methods developed for our Instron tester. They have large and small frame models, but I ordered the large frame. The equipment is sturdy, well built with software that is significantly more user friend that Bluehill used by Instron. I have had no problems with my tester and plan to purchase a second unit for our Quality department.
Strengths: Excellent vendor for linear mechanical test equipment and other physical measurement equipment. They offer similar test equipment as MTS and Instron at a lower cost.
Needs to improve: less well known, not as many fixtures and applications as other large mechanical testers such as limited extension heights and load cells.

You can probably get a Shimadzu for cheaper than Instron or MTS, so if you only need to do basic tension and compression testing Shimadzu might be your best choice.
Strengths: Shimadzu makes basic testing frames for mechanical/materials testing. The software is pretty intuitive to use. Their service people are very good.
Needs to improve: The machines are not as sophisticated as say Instron and MTS, but can do basic tests fine.
No issues observed or witnessed. The equipment is highly reliable.
Strengths: Test equipment for industrial use. Easy to use and operate.
Needs to improve: None
Highly recommend.
