Accellent Inc - (Now Lake Region Medical)

We were trying to get a few parts and ideas from accellent in our r&d lab in the passed I conacted them a few times to only have my calls and emails go unanswered. Their company was not responsive and I ended up ordering from another vender but I hear they have pretty good quality.

I spent a few years working on a project where Accellent was the source of the main sub assembly. During development, Accellent demonstrated a lot of flexibility and was able to help us develop our component by using their expertise in the field. They displayed a sense of urgency and we worked well with them throughout the development of the project.

Unfortunately, once we were done with development, and the project shifted towards manufacturing, there was a change. The urgency was gone and quality/yields suffered. I spent a lot of time "proving" that the issues we were experiencing were indeed a result of the sub assembly they were providing. In the end the experience left me somewhat sour on Accellent and has made me apprehensive about continuing any sort of relationship with them in the future.

Strengths: Experts on Dip Coated PTFE, braiding and catheter sub assemblies.

Needs to improve: Quality and yields are somewhat lackluster.

Accellent is large contract manufacturer that have many subsidiaries under its umbrella. My start up uses Accellent services include molding and machining for medical device and other industries. Accellent is large contract manufacturer that have many subsidiaries under its umbrella. Each subsidiary product group has expertise in its field but there is a severe lack of communication between each of them, which leads to lags in delivery lead times. Pricing wise, there is little benefit from having all these subsidiaries, because each one marks up the cost for their services, which hits the customer bottom line. Though my firm appreciated their expertise, they have an unwieldy corporate structure that leads to lags in delivery and costs piling up. Go with someone else.

Strengths: Industry expertise, high quality results, wide selection

Needs to improve: Slow response time

So many times I've tried to contact a component supplier only\ to find its been acquired by Accellent. Then when I try to purchase the component I'm unable to, instead I'm just bombarded with the up-sale. "What will you be using the component for? Why don't you let us make the hole part for you. Can you send me the spec and I can quote the whole part for you." So Annoying!

as a small medical device company, we actually outsource a lot of our development processes to bigger companies with more expertise, the facility to develop the product, etc so we have used accellent a few times for product assembly solutions. this allowed our engineers and designers to have access to their facility and manufacturing space. while we only products in the low thousands, they helped us provide efficient and seamless solutions for our production process. their facilities are ISO certified which meets stringent manufacturing guidelines and our company regulations. we have had great experiences working with accellent. we also really appreciated the single point of contact with our rep instead of contacting multiple people for each conversation

Strengths: innovative design, technical expertise, industry knowledge, services are reasonably priced, customer service, fast turnaround time, open and active communication with their clients, single point of contact for contract services

Needs to improve: none

Accellent has acquired many excellent vendors only to lock them away so you can no longer purchase components. When you try to, they push the upsale trying to make you use them for your production. If you take the bait, their delivery is slow, their understanding of your need is poor.

Strengths: Acquiring quality vendor and locking them away so you can never buy direct again. Trying to sell you services you don't want or need.

Needs to improve: Big, Slow, Constantly pushing the upsale

I have had a few sales representatives/engineers that have been extraordinary in helping meet my requirements and demands on projects as well as pointing me to the proper sources within the company. Without them, it would be much more difficult as i have seen as well.

all in all, many capabilities.

Strengths: Large corporation with facilities throughout the US. Excellent service if you are fortunate to get a solid sales representative to help facilitate your needs and requirements.

Needs to improve: an extremely large company with services scattered throughout. difficult at times to pinpoint where you should focus your energy to find the proper resource or even to understand the full capabilities of the company (although they cover just about every capability you may need)

When trying to think outside the box and asking them to deliver the product, its like asking a child to paint the mona lisa. They find it a little difficult and under deliver. Simple straight forward stuff that has been done over and over again. There are just so many people who work here that when they compartmentalize work things get a little lost.

Strengths: metallurgy, marker bands, wire

We use accellent as a supplier of stainless steel wire for prototyping of devices. We use the wires in fixtures, stands, etc. We like to use accelent because of their wide range of products that suits our needs. They are high quality parts and have never failed us. Accellent has worked with us to provide us custom sizes. They are willing to work with you in a bind and don't mind spending extra time at work to make sure that the job is done just right. The only thing I would say with them is that their pricing scheme forces you to order in huge volume.

Each subsidiary has its strengths but there is a lack of communication between each one. Cost wise, you won't benefit from them having all these subsidiaries, because each one will mark up the cost for their services, which is passed along to you the customer. I found them to be expensive to do business with, and their expertise is no better than the lower cost contract manufacturer.

lead times have been longer than when the companies that were all merged into what is now accellent before. a bit disappointing in that sense. now with all the capabilities, its kind of a one stop place to go to get anything you want done. too bad its become jack of all trades and master of none (especially if you factor in lead times, etc.). but if you can't find a vendor to do something that you need, doesn't hurt to go to accellent as i'm sure they do have some capability to do so

they deliver solid, quality parts when the specifications are straight forward and simple. when they are presented with something out of the box, they don’t tend to do very well. spending time for characterization or prototyping is not their strength. it’s also difficult to find the right people representing the technology that you need for a certain application. they are just too large for their own good.

When we were looking for a vendor to help with Laser cutting of materials to use in our new product line we turned to Accellent Inc. They helped up in picking the right tools for our needs. They had been recommended by a colleague and I was very surprised how professional and high quality their services were. Overall all their employees have shown to be highly knowledgeable and customer focused. The tools themselves are very high quality and the employees have come to depend on them. Would highly recommend others look into Accellent Inc for laser cutting needs.

They had done CNC metal machining job and it was good. Another time, service finishing job wasn't turn out so good. The company is too wild spread that we have to call a couple time to reach to a right department to talk to about order and billing question and stuff. Better management will lead them to a better performance company.

Strengths: Multi service company, good quality CNC machining job

Needs to improve: Too big to find a decent sales rep. It is too wide spread and the same rep doesn't stay at one field for long.

Had tried to get some prototyping done but was very disappointed. Pricing is competitive but that's where it ends. The company is too big to execute well. They dropped the ball so we looked elsewhere.

I have used Accellent for a number of projects in the past including machining of parts which would eventually be molded. They have always delivered but they're work wasn't cheap. Their numerous acquisitions have made them the jack of all trades in medical device manufacturing but I get the impression that their masters of none. While they are very capable, they probably wouldn't be my first choice when dealing with cutting edge extrusions or other more specialized jobs.

Strengths: Expansive offering of medical device manufacturing services including design, machining, extrusion, molding, joining, etc.

Needs to improve: Price and time.

Accellent Inc., is a solid company and they deliver high quality parts when the specifications are straight forward and clearly defined. They have a lot of bureaucracy when it comes to getting a product through their system - as with most extremely large companies you have to wade through a lot of paper work. Want high quality there the correct place, quick or reasonable delivery look elsewhere.

Needs to improve: Large company promotes bureaucracy, long delivery times, responsiveness lacks attention

we have contacted Accellent in the passed for some prototyping ideas and they just didn't deliver like we thought they would. their pricing is fair but that's about it.
