Exponent, Inc

When I contact Exponent, something very bad has happened that involves a potential recall. They are very responsive. in the past, they have been at our facility hours after calling them and when they arrive, they are adding value from the very beginning helping us plan and strategize the investigation and failure analysis. The last time I called them, we experienced a failure on our 2 year real time aging samples and through testing and analysis, they were able to conclude that the failure was not age related, They drew on the expertise of several of their scientists with different backgrounds to be able to reach that conclusion. In the end they provided us with a report that we would have no problem presenting to the FDA or any other auditor.

Strengths: All of their scientists are at the top of their field and they have at their disposal the most advanced testing and analytical capabilities. They are extremely customer focused and will do what ever it takes to meet a deadline.

Needs to improve: None

We have been using exponent for years no for failure mode analysis and mechanical testing services. They are the experts when it comes to this and we have been our vendors for years with great success and partnership. They are very easy to communicate with the exact results that we are looking for an able to provide us with suggestions in order to achieve those results. Given the amount of work they do and how professional they work, i'd say their pricing is very fair as well. Their customer staff is very knowledgaeable, friendly, and easy to get to work with. I have no issues recommending them for others to use. They are great to work with and we will continue to use them as a vendor.

Yes, Exponent is indeed where you will find all your failure analysis experts in a variety of specialties, ranging from nanotechnology and flavonoids to skyscrapers and barges, but in my opinion, most medical device testing probably does not require the expertise of Exponent scientists, especially when cost is an issue. At the order of my boss, I spent $10k obtaining an S-N curve, when for a mere $3k, I could’ve done it just the same, learned something, and the company could use the fixture and housing in the future. Of course Exponent has their time and place (e.g., gas pipeline explosions, building collapses), but I would choose wisely where to spend the funds. Their expertise comes at a cost. Make sure it’s worth it.

I worked with exponent on one project where we had a failure analysis on an implant. After much work in house, the results were still inconclusive, so senior management wanted us to obtain an outside perspective. We ended up using exponent. The consultant we used had a phd and over 10 years of industry experience for our particular type of implant. Although the price was steep (including a project cost in addition to hourly rate), the scientist was thorough with the analysis and the report was well written. Exponent is a good, expensive option when there are no other options left.

Needs to improve: Cost to conduct test is very high and will vary depending on education and experience of consultant.

we reached out to exponent because they have a thorough team of scientist, physicians, engineers, and regulatory consults who are all researched based to assist our firm. their quality management system is ISO 9001 certified which was a plus for us. they performed very thorough analysis for us and gave us data for the cause and how to prevent them. they also were able to assist us in finding cost effective solutions.
we were highly impressed by the thorough data analysis they provided us and have recommended them to many other companies and vendors we work with

The staff at exponent are extremely knowledgeable and services provided are extremely professional and top notch. You just may need to sacrifice on cost to achieve these results. Usually for results that i am unwilling to compromise on uncertainty with my data or quality of execution, i definitely would consider exponent as top of the list. but for maybe less rigorous jobs such as a quick SEM survey of a part, i think there are many other labs in the area to go to first to save on costs.

Great to just be able to explain what you want and walk away. They always seem to find something "interesting" that they can also investigate for a feel. Need the best go to Exponent but expect to pay for it.

We found them while we are looking for some one who can analyze the failure mode for devices for one of our project. They have very knowledge stuff that can help us guide through their process and how to improve our process

Quality team that specializes in testing services for our assembly. We've used Exponent a few times to get outside opinions on the durability and efficiency of our processes. Customer service is fantastic as they have expert knowledge and able to provide a variety of cost effective solutions. It may not be cheap to get them out to you, but their value exceeds their cost. Quality team and very reliable.

My company contracts Exponent Inc for their mechanical testing to outsource our testing to their 3rd party facilities and labs. The results were fantastic. We were pleased by the level of data accuracy along with the reporting they provided. I have interacted with both their sales and customer service department and they are highly knowledgeable. I would recommend giving Exponent Inc a chance. They will not disappoint.

Great as a last resort if all internal investigation is not fruitful

Strengths: Most people who work here hold advanced degrees or have extensive experience and knowledge about the subject matter they represent, so they are a good resource for failure analysis and testing.

Needs to improve: Consulting fees are vary from person to person and can be expensive, but results are usually well accepted by regulatory bodies.

Exponent is great at failure analysis. They need little instruction and do good work. That being said, the work is not completed on time (as promised) and is very very expensive. Did I say expensive? So all you start ups out there...beware! They do know what they are doing and need minimal direction.

While working on a project, we had a failed component. We were unable to conclude what caused our product to fail so we sought outside sources. Exponent was the company we used to help us. The consultant was very well educated and experienced in finding what was wrong. it was costly but well worth the analysis data.

Strengths: I love that after a few emails and phone conversations I was able to drop off my parts and get a quote right away. They are really great at asking the right questions about my product and end goal so that they reach a comprehensive understanding of the testing needed.

very well staff company that knows what they are doing. they are pretty expensive, so i have used them only for data that requires high scrutiny with the FDA, etc. for simple mechanical tests or corrosion tests, there are other options if you do not require the scrutiny or high levels of confidence

Most people use Exponent for failure analysis, but they also perform general material analysis as well. Of course they are much more costly than other material analysis labs. I would look elsewhere if you're not looking for expert failure analysis, since your money would be better spent elsewhere.

My startup was having issues with our prototype in development, so we hired Exponent to test and analyze our product to test for the issues leading to failures. Ron, the consultant we worked directly with was very well versed in the field and helped us resolve our issues.

I've had the unfortunate pleasure of performing failure analysis and when our finding was inclusive, we had no other choice but to turn to the experts. They were invaluable to our investigation, but we paid dearly for their services. I guess you get what you pay for!
